Our Philosophy

Dear Parents,

I've always thought that Math textbooks should be written by English majors so they make sense to normal folks like you and me! I have found it highly frustrating to be reading an explanation of a math problem, only to find that suddenly, without any prior explanation, a new variable or number has been introduced, and we are somehow just supposed to know where it came from and what it represents! To my way of thinking, the student isn't at fault for not understanding faulty explanations!

Many misunderstandings and frustrations that a student experiences in math also result from holes in their prior and overall math knowledge. As math is a subject that builds upon past knowledge, these knowledge holes can be devastating especially in the Middle School and High School years.

Experience has shown me that in many cases, the student is not at fault, nor is the student's intelligence in question. The student has simply missed several critical math skills usually beginning in elementary grades. This has cascaded into a growing math problem that is sometimes able to be hidden for years (thanks to calculators), but eventually surfaces and can be highly frustrating and painful to the student. These feelings can lead them to mistakenly believe that they are incapable of excelling at math, and build highly negative associations with mathematics. Worse, if this situation isn't remedied, then it could greatly limit their future options!

And so we believe in building friendly, personal relationships with each of our clients so they can feel completely relaxed and safe in asking anything that is unclear to them without feeling that they will be judged in any way! No question is a dumb question! We believe that optimal learning occurs when the student has a strong rapport and trust in their Tutor.

TUTORING WITH POWERFUL LEARNING STRATEGIES!

What if your child could walk into their classroom absolutely knowing that they knew the material for that day, knowing that even if their teacher threw a pop quiz at them, they would score well on it, wouldn't that be amazing?

What if your student was able to use specific learning strategies that would enable them to go from hating math, feeling too 'dumb' to really understand it, to being the student that everyone else asks for help?

And wouldn't it be great to see your child's self-esteem and confidence soar as a result?

I've seen all of these things as a Teacher and business owner at Campus Tutorial Service. And that excites me! Honestly, to be a part of enabling someone experience success, then make actual positive changes, is worth more to me than the money involved!

So what are some common things that students experience?

Many students experience test anxiety, learning difficulties, and lower grades than they would like to have. Sadly, there are students who feel inhibited from asking questions in class for fear of looking bad, or they perceive that their teacher doesn't like them.

All these items contribute to limiting that student's future choices, and ultimately even their earning potential.

Optimal improvement happens when a student has a good relationship with their instructor. This means that they sense that their Tutor likes them, is interested in their interests, and really listens to their concerns, and is willing to explain the subject at hand in a way that correlates to that student's interest and learning style.

3. WORKING AHEAD - Work on future lessons to build understanding and confidence.

4. LEARNING STRATEGIES - should be integrated with each tutoring lesson to improve the student's use of time management, to alleviate test taking anxieties, to improve the quality of their work, and ultimately to see a tangible grade increase, just to name a few.

5. FOLLOW UP and REVIEW - Continual follow up and review with the student over past items so they really do know their material.

6. ONGOING COMMUNICATIONS - Communicate with both the Parent and Teacher to maximize the effectiveness of their work.
